Defending champions San Miguel Beermen aim to hurdle sister team Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in their quest to retain their crown as they begin their best-of-five PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals showdown on Monday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Beermen and the Gin Kings set up a semifinals matchup after taking advantage of their twice-to-beat tickets during the quarterfinal round. San Miguel topped NLEX, 114-110, while Ginebra held off Alaska, 109-104, to book their places in the final four.

The Beermen are used to this stage as they have made the semifinals for the fourth straight time. The Gin Kings, on the other hand, are making their final four return after three years of absence. Expect no less than fireworks in this clash between two of the league’s most popular teams. In their elimination round duel last August 14, they went through a tough double overtime battle, with Ginebra forcing extra time after erasing a 24-point deficit. But it was San Miguel which remained victorious in the end, scoring a 111-105 win.

With Greg Slaughter out of the season, Ginebra has to find ways to stop San Miguel center June Mar Fajardo who is poised to take home his third straight MVP award this season. The Beermen’s deep lineup also boasts of Alex Cabagnot, Marcio Lassiter, Arwind Santos and import Elijah Millsap.
